Choosing a Bed Size that fits You & Your Bedroom

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

When choosing a bed, your major concern is comfort: Much of that hinges on finding a mattress that is the correct firmness for you and the way you sleep. The other component in determining comfort entails the size of the bed you choose. We all love to stretch out and while you want to choose a bed that is large enough to be comfortable, it also has to fit in the room without overcrowding the space.

Don’t just walk into a furniture showroom and select the biggest bed you can find. You may end up not being able to open and close your closet doors or walk through the room without stubbing your toe. Measure the room before you go and measure the footprint of other furniture that will stay in the room, such a dresser or highboy. Now you have a realistic idea of the amount of space available for a bed.

Mattress and box spring sets come in six basic sizes:

  1. Twin
  2. Extra-long twin
  3. Full
  4. Queen and California Queen
  5. King
  6. California King (longer and narrower than a standard King)

Take your room measurements with you when you shop for a bed and mattress set and use some common sense when making a decision. You want to leave enough space in your room to walk around the bed, open drawers and doors and be able to function comfortably in the room. Also, even if you sleep alone, don’t feel like you have to buy a twin or full size bed if you have enough room for a queen.

Bedding should also be consideration because bedding for a queen bed is more expensive than a full bed, and king bedding is the most expensive of all. If you’re on a tight budget, and you have room for a king bed, you may be better off with a queen because it will give you plenty of bed space but bed linens won’t cost and arm and a leg. On the other hand, if you or your partner is tall or has a large body frame, a king may be the most comfortable choice.

If you already own good quality bedding in a size that works for your room, and it is in good condition, of course you can select a bed in the same size. However, don’t buy a bed that is too big or too small for your needs just to save some money on bedding.

Your final consideration is your budget. In addition to the added cost of linens, blankets, comforters, pillows and decorative accents for the bed, the cost of the bed, mattress and box spring will depend on the size and the brand you choose. Mattresses come in a wide range of prices depending on the brand name and quality and some may include free delivery and pick up of the old mattress. The price of the bed itself can vary widely as well, depending on the frame, the head and foot boards and the type of wood or material that it is built from. You can find a luxurious designer bed that costs thousands of dollars or buy a simple bed frame and make a creative headboard out of an outdoor garden wall art grille, a collection of framed tropical wall art prints or even an old door.

Installing a Pet Door for Safety & Convenience

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

A pet door is a great invention for any pet lover. It gives you pet a great amount of freedom and makes life easier for you as well. It also gives your pet access to the outdoors even when you aren’t at home. Installing a pet door is a little more difficult than hanging outdoor wall art sculptures or grapes and wine decor, and there are some safety and practical issues that should be considered when choosing and installing a pet door.

Commercially Made or DIY

A trip to your local pet superstore or an online search will reveal the great variety of pet doors on the market. You’ll see everything from very simple doors to doors with bells and whistles that open and close by a remote sensor on your pet’s collar. If you want a basic door and have good building skills, you may be able to build a door yourself. However, even if you decide to go the DIY route, you should spend some time looking at commercially made doors because they well-designed features that you may want to copy.

What Size Door is Best?

Determine the size of door that is needed by considering the size of your pet. Measuring right behind the front legs, determine you pet’s height from the floor to the top of the shoulders. Also measure the width of your pet at the chest or widest point.  There is no need to buy a pet door that is much larger than your pet, however if your pet is older or has movement issues, a taller door can be easier for him to navigate because he won’t have to stoop so low to get through.

Safety Issues

For your pet’s safety, be sure that the pet door opens into a fenced portion of your yard and if the dog run has a gate, it is wise to put a deadbolt lock on the gate. This is for the safety of your pet and to make it harder for someone to enter your home through the pet door.

Keep in mind that any small person can get through a large pet door and gain access to your home, which is why you shouldn’t install a door that is sized for a Great Dane if you have a Chihuahua. If you install the pet door in an exterior door, be sure that it is situated so that a person cannot reach through and turn the lock.

A pet door that is activated by an electronic clip on the pet’s collar offers the greatest amount of security because they are self locking. In addition to keeping out human intruders, they will deter marauding raccoons and the neighbor’s cat as well.

Most commercial pet doors have a swinging flap that lets your pet pass through before securing shut on magnets. This feature helps save energy. It is also wise to choose a door that has a slide-in metal panel so that you can shut the door at will for security and energy savings.

Pet Door Installation

You will find a variety of pet doors styles that may be installed in an exterior door, in the wall and even in sliding glass doors. Installing a pet door is fairly straightforward: Follow directions carefully and gather all tools before you begin. Take special care that all measurements are correct, square and level before cutting into doors or exteriors walls.

Beds, Bedding and Creating a Gorgeous Bedroom

Friday, July 9th, 2010

The bed is always the focal point of the bedroom and to create a gorgeous bedroom, you have to start with the bed, bedding and bedding accessories. The incredible variety and styles of beds and bedding means that you can create any look or style that appeals to you, from minimalist and modern to frilly, floral Victorian. However, you have to know where to begin.

Here are some guidelines and considerations to keep in mind when creating the bedroom of your dreams.

The Furniture: Deciding on Style

If you’re starting from scratch and creating a new bedroom, the bed will define the style of the room so shop long and hard before making a final choice. Furniture stores, home decor magazine and websites, and decorated model homes are great places to get ideas. Are you drawn to the sleek lines of a glossy black platform bed with minimalist lines, or are you a sucker for a deep cherry wood four post bed? Narrowing down your style preference will automatically make your choice easier because you can eliminate those styles that don’t match your ideal.

This size of your bedroom and the amount of furniture you need will determine the size of the bed you should choose. Most couples prefer a queen or king size bed and even someone who sleeps alone will be more comfortable in a queen size bed if there’s room. Whether you need just a dresser and mirror or that plus a bureau or high boy depends on your storage needs and the size of your closet. If you have a large, efficient walk-in closet you won’t need as much furniture storage as someone who has a small closet.

While it’s easy to buy bedroom furniture in “suites”, designed sets of furniture have a very predictable, showroom look. To achieve a designer look, try to mix furniture choices with pieces that are compatible but not perfectly matched. If you’re not confident enough to totally mix things up, you might choose a bed and dresser from the same set but add night tables that are different from that furniture and maybe even different from each other. Coordinate pieces by wood type or general style to create your own designer style.

Building on the Style

Once you’ve chosen the furniture, turn your attention to the walls and think about colors that will support the style and color of your furniture. Cool blues and greens or sedate gray are good choices for a modern look; or you can add traditional warmth with a warm caramel color; or add casual flair with sunny yellow and white accents. Once you’ve chosen your wall color, you can begin shopping for bedding that coordinates with your wall color and introduces accent colors that you can repeat in other accessories. For example, if you’ve chosen traditional dark cherry furniture and have painted your walls in a rich taupe shade, you might choose a comforter and bedding in shades of cream and taupe with burgundy accents. Pick up the burgundy again in lamp shades, a throw for the foot of the bed, and in a metal tree art, flowers and grapes wall decor or other wall art. You may want to mix these colors again in an area rug or upholstered chair for the room.

Bagged bedding sets make it easier, but they can look too regimented. A better approach may be to choose a comforter and mix and match other bedding accents to create an individual look.

Creating a gorgeous bedroom is not difficult if you start with the basics – the furniture – and then build your color palette, style and decor from there.

How to Avoid Messes when Painting

Most homeowners enjoy shopping for wine decor or tropical wall sculptures to add style and drama to a room. Most also enjoy doing home improvement projects, like painting, to make a dramatic change in a bland or tired looking room. However, when you paint, you want great results as well as dramatic change, and paint splattered on your furniture or flooring will cause more drama than you’ll want to deal with. Here are painting tips to help you achieve a professional looking, perfectly neat finish.

Avoid Mishaps before they Happen

Before you begin painting, remove everything possible from the room: This includes all wall art, lamps, furniture, area rugs, accessories and accents. If some pieces of furniture are too large to remove, move them to the center of the room and cover them with a large plastic tarp. Fold the corners of the tarps and tape the tarp to itself with duct tape to protect your furniture from top to bottom. If painting the ceiling, remove the globes and decorative portions of overhead lighting, as well as ceiling fans. When painting kitchen walls, protect the edges of cabinets and countertops; cabinet faces should be protected with tarps when painting overhead.

Use tarps on the floor to prevent splatters and spills. Tarps should be taped to the floor trim; this will keep the tarp from sliding while you work, inadvertently exposing the floor. Also use blue painters tape to protect wood work and trim so that wall color doesn’t end up on the corners of your window trim. Painter’s tape will also ensure that you create a straight even line, so that the finished result will look like it was painted by a pro.

Keep a supply of clean rags, papers towels and a bucket of warm water handy so that you can clean up a spill or drip as soon as it happens.

Choosing the Right Paint

There is no good reason to use oil-based paint for interior painting and the best option for interior painting is water-based paint because it cleans up easier than oil-based paint. This is important not only when cleaning up your brushes and rollers, but also if a drip should end up on the floor or a cabinet face.

When accidents do happen, you should clean them up immediately so that a temporary problem doesn’t become a permanent one. Water-based paint drips or spatters on wood or laminate surfaces can usually be cleaned up with warm water, or soap and warm water. Dab the surface until it is loosened and the drip is blotted away. If the drip is already dry, you can often pry it loose with your fingernail or a plastic tool or plastic knife. Drips on fabric surfaces or carpet should be blotted with clean towels until as much wet paint as possible is picked up. Blot next with warm water or warm water and soap to remove a stain; a carpet steam cleaner can also help remove paint residue if done before the paint has a chance to dry.

When painting a ceiling, choose low-splatter to lessen the likelihood of tiny dots of paint ending up on the walls and on your hair.

Urban Looks for Urban Apartment Spaces

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

There are many different ways you can decorate and accessorize an apartment, but the urban style is currently quite popular. With its solid clean lines and sleek modern look, the overall simple styling of urban decorating can be a great choice, especially if you have an apartment in the city. However, even if you live in the suburbs, there’s no reason not to use this attractive style of decorating in one or more rooms of your apartment.

Choosing Furniture Styles for the Urban Apartment

Furniture that is styled with modern flair is essential for the urban look. Choose furniture pieces that have clean lines without excessive frills or details. Neutral or cool shades are often preferred when decorating. Black, white, metallic colors and glass surfaces are also popular choices. For example, in the living room pair a sleek black sofa with a glass-topped coffee table and end tables for a very modern look. Kitchens often look great when accessories and appliances feature a stainless steel finish. Keep things simple and sleek in the bedroom with minimal furniture. When accessorizing, think big and bold instead of small and fussy. One large piece of wall art, such as an oversized print or a piece of abstract metal wall art can be much more effective than a collection of small photographs. After all, it’s often the little styling details that make the difference when decorating a room.

Choosing Lighting with an Urban Flair

Use a variety of lighting options when decorating your apartment. This will add overall design to the room in addition to providing light where you need it most. Streamlined and artistic lamps that have a modern or geometric look are often good choices. Spotlights can also be used to accentuate a piece of art or an architectural detail within a room.

Effective Color Choices for Urban Decorating

When choosing decorating accents for an urban-styled apartment, it is usually most effective to stick with neutral or cool shades. Although light colors such as silver blue or cool green are quite popular, using a bolder shade can also be quite effective. For example, one dark slate blue wall within a room can add a nice visual accent. Your color selections within an apartment might also be somewhat limited depending on the color of the carpeting and flooring. If you happen to have a warm colored carpet that cannot be changed, try to stick with neutral shades for your other decorating options. Many times you can combine ivory, bone or another off-white shade with warm colored carpeting, accentuating the room with black or metallic accents. Using this method, you can still pull off an attractive urban look.

Accessorizing with Flair

Keep your accessories simple and streamlined to create a modern look. The expression “less is more” is often true in urban-styled decorating. One modern tree wall art hanging or vibrant tropical wall decor on an accent wall can be more effective than a collection of small prints scattered here and there. Window treatments are also best if kept simple to maintain the overall streamlined look within the room. If you keep things simple and focus on clean lines, you’ll be on your way towards having an urban-styled apartment you’ll be proud of.
